Dancing the gallery - gloATL at ACAC

I think they planned this just for me. gloATL danced through the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center on Thursday. Short version: 5 athletes did odd and charming dances all over the odd and charming ACAC building.

They just danced all over the place. No stage, no assigned seats, in fact no seats at all.

They call it "exploring the space." That's the way we architecture tourists like it. May I show you?

This is how my little brain thinks dance.

I needed to be there.

P1060391-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-tryptic
This little room was backstage where a quartet of women and a solo man warmed up.

P1060396-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-before-show-2-crowds
The crowd gathered and mulled about. ACAC is a funky space, I can' t keep it in my head even when I'm there. I want to peek around corners.

The lonely solo began in a corner. I was the first to notice.

P1060403-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Jenny-outside
The quartet started outdoors.

P1060405-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-outside
It sometimes seemed like the ministry of silly walks.

P1060426-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-outside-4-photographers
It was impossibly photogenic.

P1060408-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-outside
The photographers did their own dance.

P1060412-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-outside
But we're used to seeing photographers dance.

P1060430-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-outside-fans-crowd-false-color
The crowd could move around but most stood still.

P1060432-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-outside-4-dancers-3-fans
Late arrivals walked right into the company.

They weren't just standing there posing. Hear the freight train in the background?

P1060442-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-outside-heading-in
They led us inside.

P1060443-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Lauri-Stallings-beat-box
Lauri put on the Talking Heads then Ray Charles' "I can't stop loving you." There was silence too.

P1060444-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-4-in-a-niche
The quartet gathered in a niche.

They did a mystery dance while the solo attracted the crowd. I thought of the 3 graces (+1) from Primavera.

P1060454-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-man-solo-squat
Would he join the quartet?

P1060467-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-man-solo-glass-block
He moved though the crowd but...

P1060474-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-eyes-left-arm-right
..no.

P1060479-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-solo-alone-crowd-left
So alone.

They danced in onesies, twosies, and foursies while the solo stayed in the "magic corner."

P1060500-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-end-Lauri-talks
Any other performance would be over when Dancemaker Lauri Stallings began answering questions.

P1060493-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-end-dancer-crawl
But they danced on.

Making their way backstage.

P1060497-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-dancers-exit

Did they do this just for me? A great event catalyzed a great space. Effortless and memorable for me, that's the way I like it.

This is just a warm up for May performances at the Old Fourth Ward skateboard park. You'll want to be on the look out. They plan to perform while the skaters are doing their thing.

P1060429-2012-04-05-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-3-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-outside-fans-crowd
You might be mesmerized.

Enjoying Space with gloATL at ACAC

Lauri Stallings hates wasted space. Me too.

Lauri is "Dancemaker" for gloATL, the Atlanta dance troop that rarely dances on stage.

They dance spaces, they dance parks, MARTA Stations, they dance buildings. They dance in front, behind, and in the audience. Not everybody likes their dancing that way. But I do.

You never quite know what's going on.

You might turn to see jump-suited dancers, Virginia Coleman and Nicole Johnson, sashay by. Where are they going?

P1030611-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-fiction-preshow-Videopreview
Inside the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center.

Here are a few pictures from Friday nights' performance of
"Physical Suite 2 on a Theme of Non-Fiction" by gloATL at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (ACAC).

I can't explain the title but let me summarize: Four dancers explore the big rooms at ACAC for about an hour. There was a Physical Suite 1 #1 on October 6 when it was warmer and sunnier.

P1030674-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Pas-de-trois
It's between exhibitions at ACAC, the space is mostly empty right now. ACAC's next opening is Fri, Jan 13, 7-10pm: Day Job: Georgia, and 100,000 Cubicle Hours.

On with the show:

P1030618-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Nicole-awaits-dyptic
Before the show, dancers may appear anywhere. They stand silently.

P1030613-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-fiction-3-Dancers-Wait
The crowd mills around not knowing quite what to make of them.

There is a Buckingham Palace Guard effect. Should you ignore them; talk to them, make them laugh?

P1030626-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Virginia-blur-n-Faces
The action may start with a blur right beside you.

P1030632-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Fans
You may be in the right spot or not. If you stay in one place, the right spot will eventually come to you.

P1030634-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Lauri-spins-music
I pay attention to
Lauri, but even she can't take it all in. She appears at "the box" from time to time to change the music or change the silence. How much is planned, how much improvised?

One of the tunes was "Motoc" from Loscil's album Plume. Listening helps me recall the performance. But it wasn't all ambient, far from it.

P1030637-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Up-The-Wall
Some dancers go up. You don't expect up. But Lauri hates to waste space.

Early on the crowd doesn't knows quite where to be. By the end, we still don't know.

P1030642-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Pas-de-deux-w-childern
After a while, you begin to enjoy the ride.

P1030641-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-One-Waiting
Standing still in the shadows is dancing.

P1030653-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-fiction-3-noisy-Dancers-VideoPreivew
There are solos, duets, trios...

P1030664-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Quartet-4x
...
and quartets.

P1030670-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Nicole-Edge-Tryptic
ACAC has angles, niches, and shadows galore.

P1030676-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Hard-to-See
Sometimes you aren't in the right place.

P1030677-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Window-Dance-4x
ACAC's funky window is an outdoor stage for an indoor audience.

P1030691-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Window-Dance-Outside
I followed outside.

The audience can go where they want. But the instinctual hierarchy between performer and audience keeps most of us still.

P1030685-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Window-Dance-Outside-6x
Nicole.

P1030693-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Wall-Fans-Paul-et-al
The crowd gets in the grove but still doesn't know where to look next. The comfort of loved ones nearby takes some of the edge off.

P1030647-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-Fiction-Faces
The freedom to move is a delight for children and for me.

P1030706-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-fiction-Dancers-Wall-Fans-dyptic
The audience becomes part of the show but wary about joining in.

The children (beginning of this video) know what to do.

The crowd gets into the chase.

At times it's like the Ministry of Silly Walks.

P1030714-2012-01-06-gloATL-ACAC-Physical-Suite-2-on-a-theme-of-non-fiction-4-Dancer-QA
At the end we meet the performers.

Bravo.

Terry's Must Do List September 22 - October 1

I hope to do all these. If you are in Atlanta, I hope to see you there and maybe at a few more events.

1. The Atlanta Preservation Center's first "Sacred Spaces" tour starts this Thursday.
It runs September 22, 24, 25, 2011, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. It's 7 mini-events that cross the spectrum of Atlanta's religious community and history. Churches are, hands down, our best collection of buildings. They are meant to inspire our best impulses. They each mean something personal to 100s' and thousands of our neighbors, across generations. This is the best of architecture tourism.

The Atlanta Preservation Center labors quietly, doing what they can to advocate for preservation in Atlanta. Please like them on Facebook, right now. Follow them @PreserveAtlanta on Twitter. This is their "office" at the Grant Mansion.

2. Spotlight On Design at SWITCH Modern - Radcliffe Bailey, Merrill Elam, and Brian Bell on Wednesday, September 28 6p-8.
"Spotlight on Design"is SWITCH Modern's monthly salon. On Wednesday architects Merrill Elam and Brian Bell will discuss Radcliffe Bailey's house/studio. That's pretty darn good if you ask me. Might be a crowd, you'll need to R.S.V.P.

All the cool design kids will be there, it's easy and easy going, kind'a looks like this:
P1090333-2011-03-30-Switch-Modern-Spotlight-on-Design-Todd-Murphy

3. Flux 2011, Friday, September 30, 2011 8pm-12 in Castleberry Hill
I don't know how to put it: You walk Castleberry Hill in the dark from one "event" to another and it gets all magic on you. Art, dance, sounds, projections, performance, light, you won't be able to take it all in. Bring your buds; they'll thank you. You don't need to dress up but you are welcome to dress crazy.

You might see a projected lost zebra:

4. Modern Atlanta hosts premiere of MY PLAYGROUND on October 1, 2011 7:30pm at Plaza Theater
I attended a press screening of this 50 minute film. It's about Parkour: "Parkour is a sport in which you have to go from one point of the city to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, overcoming any obstacles in your way: walls, fences, trees, etc. This has made Parkour THE urban sport, included in recent music videos, advertisements and feature films." You might have seen snippets of parkour in Youtube. It's odd, amazing, and a bit scary. It will make you want to do it or wish your were young enough to do it.

It could be a part of your Poncey-Highlands evening. It's the night of the October Ponce Crush too. This is not a dull place.

Maybe we'll see Anthony from Team SlipStream Parkour.
