Panorama from the roof with Ralph and Ruth

Don't say I didn't tell you. There is more next week. Mark you calendars for next year.

We did the The Stacks Lofts + Artists Tour at the Fulton Bag Mill; we did the Ponce Crush Gallery Art Stroll; we did the Telephone Factory Art Show & Sale. We had time for some football too.

Check my Flickr page for the pictures. I only have have time to show you my first panorama.

One of the delights of the Bag Mill was meeting and touring with Ruth and Ralph. They live in a loft in Decatur and therefore, are cooler than you or me. Here they are on the rooftop deck of Building H looking towards Stone Mountain.

But I want to show you the panorama from building E. It starts looking west towards the Georgia State Capital. There is a bit of glare from the late afternoon sun.

Here you go. It' more fun if you watch it full screen.

Here are a few teasers:

Big Art in Castleberry Hill: Hense and "Blue Husky"

Caslteberry Point Lofts commissioned graffiti artist Hense and SCAD students David Fields, Chris Wright, and Will Young to do BIG art pieces. This is a detail from Hense.

If you've seen much Graffiti in Atlanta, you've seen the "Hense" tag. I'm fine with legal graffiti not so fine with illegal. In any case Hense is a major Atlanta artist able to manage large projects, difficult working conditions, and crews of assistants. He has worked internationally. Hense may well be the most "seen" Atlanta artist.

It's not the best time for downtown rentals so developer Jerry Miller commissioned 2 large scale works for the Castleberry Point retail space at the corner of Nelson and Walker Streets just south of Downtown Atlanta. This is from Hense. The girls at my house think it's a flower garden:
P1010082-2010-03-12-Castleberry-Point-Hense
See the exit sign over the door? This thing is big.

This is the view from outside. See the blue to the right? That's "Blue Husky."
P1010097-2010-03-12-Castleberry-Point-From-Outside-Left-Hense-Right-Blue-Husky

Blue Husky is more than 250 feet of plastic, lit from underneath, animated by huge fans.

Words and pictures fail me. A walk or drive by Blue Husky will reveal a huge but safe Tsunami-in-a-loft.

Here are the artists who created Blue Husky. Those men had been working hard on a mammoth scale.

A bit of video

The best way to see this is at the 2nd Friday Castleberry Hill Art Stroll. The next one on on April 9, 2010. The weather should be pretty good.

Thanks,
Terry

Artists: 2009 Telephone Factory Art Show Atlanta

I'm participating in Metamorphosis Monday at Between Naps on the Porch. Thanks to Susan! This used to be a telephone factory and it was built to last. Now it's an art, design, and coolness factory. Once a year we get a look inside. Design fans, you'll want to see the a few pictures of a French style collection in the postscript.

Fun art...

Loft / Art Stroll at Castleberry Point Atlanta

Architecture Tourist Auxiliary members, Rachel, JoAnn and I, did the Castleberry Hill 4th Friday Art Stroll on 6-26-09. We were too lazy to leave the Castleberry Point Lofts - artists, photographers, 5 open lofts, rooftop views, food, wine, friends - we just hung out there. We talked to several folks who lived down there. It gave us a chance to imagine an urban loft lifestyle. There is no place in Atlanta like Castleberry Hill.

This is upstairs in one of the lofts. Here is the floorplan.

This loft floorplan has access to rooftop patios.

P6260456-June-Castleberry-Stroll-Castleberry-Point-Loft-Rooftop-Terraces-To-North

We met some artists. Here is Michael McGill at JollyOink.com

Photographer Shani Lewis, one of several photographers showing with Atlanta Photography Exhibit (APE). We also talked with Max Shirley (not shown) a director of APE.

And Laura Wellem:

The rooftop was a great place to watch the sunset.

We also were delighted to me the Two sisters who'll be opening the Two Sisters Market this fall, a much needed grocery in Castleberry Point.

Here are some more pictures, 14 in all.

Virginia Cotton Docks - Sampson Street, Atlanta

Hooked on Houses is hosting her "Hooked on Fridays" blog party; I hope y'all will click here and have look. There is a tiny, sentimental reward and a map at the end of this post. I've extended this little tour of Sampson Street in this on a new post.

You'll have to imagine the interior decor of these warehouse lofts in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward. I'm hooked on the Virginia Cotton Docks. On the dead end of John Wesley Dobbs at Randolph Street.

P6180394-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Street-Front-Detail-Roof-Top-Terrace

There are some for rent. You might drive by this sign 100 times before you really looked.

P6180393-Virginia-Cotton-Dock-Sign-Detail

These were real track side warehouses. I know nothing about their history.

P6180394-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Street-Front

These were obviously turned into lofts long before lofts were cool and back when the Old Fourth Ward wasn't so nice.

P6180395-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Street-Front-Detail

Mint Gallery is there. An Artist's opening would be the perfect excuse for a visit.

P6180400-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Mint-Gallery-Orange-Door

Here is the business end of the Virginia Cotton Docks. It's on a railroad siding serviced by what will be Atlanta's Beltline.

P6180399-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Trackside-Loading-Docks

Careful on that first step.

P6180399-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Trackside-Loading-Docks-Detail

Across the Beltline is another old warehouse, now a restaurant.

P6180397-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Belt-Line-Looking-South

I meant "future" Beltline, here is a view to the north. This will be a greenway, a low tech transportation corridor, or something. Everybody is excited about it.

P6180397-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Belt-Line-North

Here is unit "M" You'll need to click the picture and make it bigger. It's a rather shabby front for what must be very cool loft.

P6180396-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Street-Front-North-M

These windows and doors are not standard warehouse equipment. I'd enjoy a peek inside.

P6180396-Virginia-Cotton-Docks-Street-Front-North-E-Detail

While there, Architecture Tourists will enjoy all 3 blocks of Sampson Street and particularly the colorful Irwin Street Market at the south end...

P6180409-Irwin-Street-Market-South-Facade

...where you might find a couple taking engagement pictures in front of Isadora's Doodles.

P6180407-Irwin-Street-Market-West-Facade-Engagement-Pictures-

P6180408-Irwin-Street-Market-West-Facade-Engagement-Pictures-

I sure appreciate your dropping by. There is more to see on this little street. It's just blocks from the King Historic District, Inman Park, Cabbagetown, Little 5 Points and more. And don't miss the wonderful Wigwam. I'd be happy to help you find your way.

Thanks to Atlanta blogger Aspirations of a Southern Housewife who also enjoys Irwin Street Market and the Old Fourth Ward. I've extended this little tour of Sampson Street in this on a new post.
